BA (Hons) Animation

Well-selected images and personal statement says a lot about an applicant and their work. In your personal statement we would expect your enthusiasm and engagement with animation to date to shine through. This could be what you have been watching, making, events you may have attended etc.

Generally, we would expect to see examples of the following:

  • Different approaches to drawing and image making (could be observational drawing, character design, storyboarding, examples of course work)
  • Sketch book pages or development sheets
  • Examples of work that demonstrate the communication of ideas, opinions, content and narrative/sequential thinking

At this stage in your career we would much rather see experimental and innovative developmental work rather than all finished work.

We would like to see a glimpse of work that demonstrates an informed interest in Animation.

BA (Hons) Comic & Concept Art

The images an applicant submits says a lot about an applicant and their work. Our guidance is not meant to limit your creative statement. In general terms, however, we would expect to see examples of the following:

  • A range of approaches to drawing and image making exploring a breadth of media
  • Evidence of drawing from both observation (eg. life drawing or still life) and the imagination would be desirable
  • Examples of design/idea development/visual storytelling which may include character/creature/environment development, sequential drawing, pre-production or 3D concepting
  • Demonstrate an interest in narrative, drawing, image making and contemporary comic and concept art

At this stage in your education we are much more interested in ideas development, work in progress and drawing skills rather than completed polished projects.

BA (Hons) Creative Advertising

We are aware that some students will be from a more literary background and may not have the traditional portfolio (book). We are looking for examples of creativity – we want to see your ability to generate and develop creative ideas. We can then see the process that you’ve used and the decisions you’ve made when solving problems with your work.

Please submit three samples of your work demonstrating your skills and inventiveness, a use of a variety of media and your use of visual and verbal language. Your work may be written or it may be visual eg sketch books, photography or film.

BA (Hons) Creative Writing

The samples of work you choose to submit should show your creative, imaginative and considered use of language in a variety of writing styles. We want to see work that best represents you and your writing interests. Include at least one piece of writing that you consider to be finished and which demonstrates you writing style and interests.

In addition, please include two examples of work in progress, at various stages of development. This can be notes on ideas, drafts of a piece of writing and/or your comments on how you are developing and refining your ideas and use of language, and ways in which you make decision about the varieties of tone, style, voice and content in your writing.

Your samples of work can contain more than one genre of writing and you might want to consider a music review, a piece of poetry, your thoughts on a current social or political situation, a short piece of travel writing, excerpts from a blog, or a short story.

At this stage in your career we are looking for developing writing, therefore choose a range of materials that best demonstrate your enthusiasm and knowledge of writing, language and communication.

BA (Hons) Fashion Branding with Communication

If you are thinking of applying to our course, we are looking for creative individuals from a variety of backgrounds with the ability to develop concepts, ideas and communicate these effectively.

So, no matter what your background is, choose three samples of your best work for your portfolio.

The work could include a variety of creative work demonstrating a range of skills such as:

  • Examples of photography
  • Examples of concept/ idea development perhaps through a project development
  • Film or moving image
  • Written pieces of work such as reports and or essays, magazine, website or blog content writing
  • Social media content and development

The following guidance is intended as a general check-list, but this is open to your individual interpretation, as it is important that you show your unique creative identity through your work.

Three pieces of work for submission to include a combination of the below:

  • Drawing; ‘thinking through drawing’ and illustrative examples - Sketching, life drawing, illustration, design
  • Colour and mixed media considerations and application
  • A critical approach to the developmental stages of your work, through sketches and annotations - Sketchbook pages
  • Photographs of 2D and 3D work

At this stage in your career we understand that you haven’t all worked on fashion photography projects. We would like see three images that communicate an understanding of the kinds of image fashion photographers make. Examples could include:

  • Portraits
  • Studio work
  • Location work with models
  • Street style photographs

We are looking for students who have a passion for cinema, film and the screen. We want to see examples of exciting work that best represent you and your enthusiasm for visual storytelling. Examples might include short films and videos you have worked on, scripts, stories, photographs, artwork or text and film critique (such as film reviews, essays or blog posts).

At this stage in your career we like to see experimental innovative drawing and developmental work as well as your examples of finished work.

A careful selection of well presented design work says a lot about an applicant. Our guidance is not meant to limit your creative statement instead should give you an idea of what we would like to see.

In general terms, however, we would like to see examples of the following:

  • Design/idea development.
  • Images from sketchbooks, notebooks, and design sheets.
  • Examples of work that demonstrate involvement in the use of type and image in relation to visual research.
  • Critical diary, notebook, essay, extracts etc.

Remember at this stage in your career, we would much rather see experimental and innovative developmental work rather than all finished work.

  • At this stage in your career we would much rather see experimental and innovative developmental work rather than all finished work

We would like to see a glimpse of work that demonstrates an informed interest in illustration.

BA (Hons) Photography

The three images need to be selected from your portfolio of photographic work, and be examples of your creative output taken from projects you have been working on.

At this stage in your career we would much rather see experimental and innovative developmental work rather than all finished work.

The three photographs can be part of a series, or from separate projects. They can be examples of individual photographs, montages, collages of whatever best represents you.

Make sure you communicate your photographic interests clearly in your personal statement.

BA (Hons) Textile Design

Tell us more about yourself in three key pieces!

Our guidance is not meant to limit your creative statement but to offer you an opportunity to select your key strengths and what represents you as a creative.

Be open minded about your selection; you can choose from any of the following examples (or your own..):

  • Examples of drawing and colour usage
  • Examples of design development
  • An exciting page from your sketchbook
  • Examples of print and/or materials manipulation
  • Concept development/idea page

We are looking for an experimental and innovative pieces that will show off your handwriting and personality. You can choose developmental work rather than finished work, sometimes a five minute sketch is the best!

When we view your three pieces of work, we will be looking for evidence of:

  • Well-developed visual skills in any visual media. Ideally you should show more than one medium across the three examples.
  • An ability to create work which communicates clearly. Select work which has a clear message or intention.
  • A curious and inquiring mind. We look for work which engages with contemporary issues in creative ways.
