Julie Hughes

BA (Hons) Textile Design - Senior Lecturer

Julie is a Senior Lecturer in BA (Hons) Textiles Design, having previously taught in Textile and Digital Design at University of Leeds and The Glasgow School of Art. Prior to teaching Julie worked in the fashion textile industry as a Senior Print designer working for a number of prestigious companies in London and New York.

She continues to work as a design practitioner running her own design consultancy company called Yuyu Ltd. Her design projects have been commissioned by a number of national and international clients from Marks & Spencer, John Lewis, Harrods and Harrods and American companies like Target and Walmart. She is an exhibitor at International Textile Trade Fairs and shows including Surtex (New York), Heimtex (Frankfurt), Indigo (Paris) and Top Drawer (London).

Her current role involves teaching across all levels and she is joint Year Tutor for Level 5. Responsibilities within the role involve development, planning and delivery across all modules at Level 5 through a series of lectures, seminars and workshop teaching. Her area of textile specialism is within Digital Textile Design and she is responsible for overseeing the CAD programme across all three years.

Julie’s current academic research investigates the importance of textiles archives and the reinterpretation of these archives in a contemporary design style using Digital rendering.
