In his role as Head of Graphic Design, Illustration and Animation, Fred is responsible for the overall strategic development and delivery of the BA (Hons) Illustration, BA (Hons) Graphic Design, BA (Hons) Animation and BA (Hons) Digital Film, Game & Animation. Over the past seven years he has written and validated the specialist degrees in Graphic Design and Illustration and co-written the Animation degree for Leeds Arts University. Fred has also played a significant role in the development of the common module framework delivered across all degrees at the University. As eLearning Advocate he has also taken a leading role in the development of the University's Virtual Learning Environment – eStudio. In addition Fred has been invited to work as a subject specialist for the Open University, Goldsmiths and Lasalle (Singapore) as part of national and international validation panels.
Fred’s creative background is in Illustration and Visual Communication and he has worked in various roles in further and higher education over the past fifteen years. As a result his practice as an educator has focussed on developing programmes, curricula and delivery methods that encourage an individual understanding of the collaborative nature of professional creative practice. Significant research projects have explored the role of the group critique in contemporary art and design education, the use of blogs and personal learning environments in the delivery and assessment of practice based degrees, and the role of collaboration in the development of individual creative practice. The overall aim of these projects has been to help develop student centred approaches to learning whilst at the same time helping students develop the necessary skills to successfully engage with the creative industries at a professional level.
In addition to developing the new Illustration degree as Programme Leader, Fred is currently studying towards an MA Education through which he is researching the impact of socio economic factors on the strategic development of higher education. He is also continuing to take a leading role in the development of eLearning and blended learning at Leeds Arts University.
