We spoke to current BA (Hons) Fine Art student Maj Nyman about studying on the painting strand...
Why did you choose Leeds Arts University?
I chose Leeds Arts University as it is an art-based community rather than a single art course facility. This means that it is ideally suited to an artist like me, as I can be with like-minded peers.
What made you select Fine Art?
I chose Fine Art, as in my opinion it offers the most options/flexibility of any course and I feel confident that whatever steps I take thereafter I will have the means to do so. I feel that it is the course that allows total freedom to express yourself artistically.
What do you really enjoy about your Programme and the University?
I really enjoy the freedom of the programme and how it encourages you to go your own way. The general goodwill and helpfulness of the University has made me feel at home here.
What are the studios and facilities like at the University?
The facilities are great.
What are you currently working on - what area do you specialise in?
I am currently working on the human/animal relationship in stories and life and how the animal has come to be a metaphor for our positive and negative attributes. I am also interested in the beauty and otherness of animals. I am looking at anthropomorphism and fairy tales and how I can write my own stories that help to highlight the human condition. I specialise in painting, however, I am very multimedia focused with a strong link to drawing.
Where do you draw your inspiration?
I draw my inspiration from nature, people, psychology, books, film, fairy tales, myths, magic etc. Everything really, I am an avid reader and film buff.
What do you plan to do after University?
I plan to be a fully-fledged artist in whatever form that presents itself, an illustrator, storyteller or plain old artist. I also plan on travelling around the world.
Tell us what you like about Leeds?
I like the shopping centres and the galleries that are dotted around Leeds and how easy it is to get around.
