Zlata Alekhno is a final year Fashion Design student. We caught up with her to find out more about her degree, and her ambitions for the future.
Why did you choose to study at Leeds Arts University?
First time when I heard about Leeds Arts University was during my Foundation Diploma in Bristol. I was researching different artists in UK and I found out that Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth and many more creatives studied at Leeds Arts University. Since then it became a small dream to do my degree here.
What do you specialise in and what are you working on at the moment?
I am a third year student specialising in Fashion Design. At the moment I am developing ideas for a Final Graduate collection where I will make 6 outfits. I also decided to start my Youtube channel to document final year and build audience.
How does Leeds Arts University help you develop your practice?
With great support and guidance from tutors I was able to find my style and voice. I can describe my work as modern, minimal and challenging with great attention to details. When I applied to Leeds Arts University I though I wanted to study fashion communication and styling, but after a few weeks I realised that I am definitely a fashion designer. In Leeds Arts University I have access to all workshops and facilities, which makes it even more exiting and I can always develop my practice and try new things.
What do you plan to do after University?
Well, I believe I could change my mind during final year as new opportunities and ideas could come to me. Ideally I want to set up my own business making clothes and accessories. I also will continue to build my Youtube channel. I am open to all opportunities as soon as it will allow me to be happy and develop myself.
What makes Leeds a good place to study?
Leeds has a vibrant and creative environment. It is a growing city and a great alternative to London, because it’s much more affordable to study and live.
