We caught up with Fashion Design student Olivia to find out more about her course, and why she chose to study in Leeds...
Why did you choose to study at Leeds Arts University?
I chose to study at Leeds Arts University because I really liked the idea of going to a small university where the tutors knew who you were. I looked around other uni’s and I didn’t feel as welcomed. I came to the open days and everyone was so kind. The other reason I chose Leeds Arts University is the class sizes, I liked that they were small and you could spend more time with the tutors talking to them about your work.
What do you specialise in and what are you working on at the moment?
I specialise in fashion design; which I chose as I enjoy designing and making. I am currently working on my dissertation research, looking into how arts and craft/handcraft help people with mental health issues. I am visiting exhibitions and interviewing people who attend the sessions and also those who run them. I enjoy creating pieces by hand focusing on embellishments and surface design on my designs.
I am also still working with a brand that I did a placement with during my second year, I am currently freelancing for them, helping them with their new collection which will go out to stores around the world.
How does Leeds Arts University help you develop your practice?
University has helped me so much with developing my practice, the tutors are so helpful and are always there to help with anything. I find talking to my tutors easy which helps when you are really struggling with your work. The technical help is amazing, the support from the tutors is really helpful.
What do you plan to do after University?
I don’t have any huge plans for when I finish University, I would really like to get a paid internship and maybe work on my own thing at the same time. I really enjoy creating clothing for myself and friends/family so I would like to do this on the side, but to sell.
What makes Leeds a good place to study?
I really enjoy studying in Leeds, the city is so friendly and isn’t super expensive! The city centre and night life is amazing and everything is all in one place. I came to study in Leeds as it wasn’t too far away from home and I really liked the city and of course uni!
