The BA (Hons) Comic & Concept Art course provides an opportunity to focus on Comic Art & Concept Art as an industry focused specialist discipline. This is a new course for 2018 and offers fantastic opportunities for you to develop into a highly skilled, innovative and specialist creative professional.
You will not only develop your strengths as a commercial illustrator, artist and designer but also learn to build and manage your own professional practice. You will investigate a wide range of applications for sequential illustration, character design, comic strip, concept art and pre-production concept development and visualisation using both traditional and new media to realise your creative ambitions.
With the BA (Hons) Comic & Concept Art course running alongside the well-established BA (Hons) Illustration, BA (Hons) Graphic Design, BA (Hons) Animation and BA (Hons) Creative Advertising courses there are exciting opportunities to collaborate with creatives from other disciplines and with different skills to your own. You will take advantage of our excellent links with professional practitioners and creative industry experts, and on graduation will have the choice of a wide range of career options.
This is an exciting new course with a focus on developing your practical, technical and professional understanding of:
- Sequential illustration, visual narrative and visual communication for comic strip and comic art
- Character development for 2D, 3D and 4D production
- Print-based, online, commercial and independent publishing
- Pre –production concept visualisation for film production, game design and live performance
Working individually and collaboratively in a studio environment you will have access to excellent facilities including traditional/digital print processes, industry-standard Mac suites loaded with the latest creative software and technical facilities. You will have opportunities to apply your skills across a range of creative applications including concept art, scene design storyboarding, comics, publishing, character design, caricatures and graphic novels. Your learning will have a professional focus through live projects, competition briefs, industrial experience and supported professional research. Over three years you will develop your individual interests in commercial, independent or freelance practice and ambitions within a range of creative careers from self published comics and commercial comic art to concept art for the film and game industries.
We have excellent established industry links for work experience, visiting professionals and studio visits. There are many opportunities for collaboration with other courses, particularly Illustration, Graphic Design, Creative Advertising, Animation and Filmmaking along with professional practitioners and organisations including Thoughtbubble – the leading comic festival in Europe, based in Leeds.
You will be supported in developing your own networking, collaboration and employment opportunities in order to establish a flexible and sustainable career across the creative industries. As well as developing a highly skilled professional practice, you will develop a range of career options and the confidence to make informed decisions about your future as a professional comic artist or concept artist.
