We caught up with BA (Hons) Animation student Wing about studying in the UK, what inspires her work and her plans after graduation...
How did you first hear about Leeds Arts University?
I heard about Leeds Arts University in high school from my art teacher
Why did you choose to study at Leeds Arts University?
I chose to study at Leeds Arts University because it encourages creativities among students. The school has a wide range of facilities and professionals that students can access almost anytime of the week.
What are the advantages of studying at a specialist arts institution?
You can focus more on a specific subject you interested in and develop skills in professional manner with better techniques normal art school cannot provide. Students will be well prepared for the future career while they are still studying and have opportunities to explore further about the industry.
There are important differences in the way art and design is taught in the UK compared to other countries. What have you noticed regarding the learning experience at Leeds Arts University?
It has been great so far. In Hong Kong, where art is not a subject in mainstream, we did not have much time and encouragement to experience art at school. Leeds Arts University has a positive atmosphere of learning and being creative which is a pleasure to work under such artistic environment. Nevertheless, tutors are very helpful and always give constructive feedbacks for work improvement; peer groups allow a lot of interaction between course mates; also hugely focus on the process of experimenting than result.
How have you adjusted to life in the UK and what advice would you give a new international student?
Eat hard, Play hard and Work hard. I suggest international students to feel the city and slow down. Enjoy school life and do not be afraid to speak out.
What are the studios and facilities like at the University?
The studios were renewed during Summer that become even bigger than before. There are Mac and PCs in every studio with good quality of printers and projector that aid the teaching. Facilities like ceramic area, print room and photography studio etc. are very popular because they have everything you want that even students from different courses can access.
Do you feel that studying at Leeds Arts University is preparing you well for life after graduation?
I have been learning different computer programmes and drawing techniques that enhance practical skills and building up showreel and CV for internships and job simultaneously. By doing so, I am more equipped for searching ideal job after graduation and gain important experience out of that.
