We caught up with BA (Hons) Photography student Melvin about studying in the UK, what inspires his work and his plans after graduation...

Why did you choose to study at Leeds Arts University?

I really like Leeds in general, chill place with a great downtown where you can shop and eat. Also its easy to get around England and Scotland to visits since its around the middle of the country.

What are the advantages of studying at a specialist arts institution?

It is great just to focus on what really interest you because you can expand your knowledge in that area while having fun doing it. Also you can gain access to equipment where you usually don't have, for example a full size stduio with lighting kit installed, different camera and lens, printing room, etc. You can also collaborate with different department where you share the same interests, for example photography students work with fashion students for various projects.

How have you adjusted to life in the UK and what advice would you give a new international student?

Adjusting to life in UK is not that difficult for me, and I got used to it pretty quick, my advice is to get to know the area, explore the city a little, before winter comes and sunset at 3pm.

What are the studios and facilities like at the University?

Studios are great, the cove is the biggest studio where you can do fashions shots, or really large scale projects, there are smaller studios where if you don't require a a lot of space, they are available too. You can get your work print in the print room, where they offers the highest quality prints with the lowest possible price.

Do you feel that studying at Leeds Arts University is preparing you well for life after graduation?

You will get prepared and ready to dive straight in to the art industry after you graduate, you will learn how to write CV, getting work experience, having your own exhibition and many more.
