We caught up with BA (Hons) Creative Advertising student Jessica about studying in the UK, what inspires her work and her plans after graduation...

How did you first hear about Leeds Arts University?

It was online, I was looking for Art Universitys in the UK.

Why did you choose to study at Leeds Arts University?

I basically fell in love with the quality of the courses and I realised that, after talking to Emma - the International Officer, I would be really happy here and I would be supported.

What are the advantages of studying at a specialist arts institution?

It is amazing to be surrounded by art. It’s good to be in a place where you feel that you belong there and you can find reference from different types of art just in the next floor.

There are important differences in the way art and design is taught in the UK compared to other countries. What have you noticed regarding the learning experience at Leeds Arts University?

It is a high quality standard I think. We are taught in a way that we learn how to create in that high level.

How have you adjusted to life in the UK and what advice would you give a new international student?

I felt really cold in the beginning! Now everything is fine, though. We get used to the weather and it doesn’t take that long. Life here is different, of course, the culture is different too and the advice I’d give is to make friends, meet people and a nice place to start it is at uni.

What are the studios and facilities like at the University?

The studios are the places where the students spend most of the time. We have the classes there and we can also study or do work. The facilities are amazing, it makes us feel really comfortable to do all the work we have to do.

Do you feel that studying at Leeds Arts University is preparing you well for life after graduation?

Definitely. During the course we get in touch with many people in the market and besides that we learn how life outside uni is. So yes, I feel a lot more prepared than before.

Tell us what you like about living in Leeds

Leeds is a very good place to live. There’s a lot going on, if you don’t want to get bored, you can always find something nice to do. Besides Creative Advertising, I’m a lot into music and I found Leeds very interesting. All kinds of arts, music, people, interests. And there are many students in Leeds, so you can find young people everywhere.
