We caught up with BA (Hons) Visual Communication student Chinatsu about studying in the UK, what inspires her work and her plans after graduation...

Why did you choose to study at Leeds Arts University?

The tutor at my previous University recommended me Leeds University of Art. Then I did further research on the University and the courses that they offer. The pull factor that prompted me to choose Leeds University of Art is mainly its ranking and its alumni.

What are the advantages of studying at a specialist arts institution?

In my opinion, facilities are provide for only art purposes and that is more professional than general universities.

There are important differences in the way art and design is taught in the UK compared to other countries. What have you noticed regarding the learning experience at Leeds Arts University?

I believe that knowing how to speak good English is very important as it is one of the main global language, therefore studying in the UK will allow me to improve my English since I will be in a fully English speaking environment. Furthermore, I can gain exposure to the culture and art in Europe. Also LCA provides me free English lessons is very helpful.

How have you adjusted to life in the UK and what advice would you give a new international student?

Still have not get used to live here yet. However I have found some asian shops in around city centre. There’s foods cure me so much to make less homesick. In addition, LCA students can join any society in University of Leeds. They have plenty of society which is for asians and another nationalities. That can encourage make more friends and exchange
information about shops in here. However, buses are often late in here so I recommend to use cheap taxi apps if the buses are seem not coming.

What are the studios and facilities like at the University?

Plenty of things I can do with these facilities, because there is everything, for example, there is places for metal moulding , ceramic and print making. Also there is more than 3 computer rooms.

Do you feel that studying at Leeds Arts University is preparing you well for life after graduation?

Yes, because they give us many opportunity to do new things and technique. In my opinion, Adobe Illustrator, InDesign inductions were very helpful. The reason is these techniques are connected to things that I want to do in the future.
