Course content

  • Beginners (Level one):
This course will establish a basic knowledge of the fundamentals in monotype, intaglio (etching, drypoint, collograph, chine colle), relief (Lino) and silkscreen printmaking techniques. The aim is for beginners to acquire a general appreciation and awareness of techniques so that they can apply their knowledge in any number of ways at a future point.Students are often amazed by the variety of prints they produce, as each process has its own distinct appearance and surface quality. Some processes are very labour intensive, while others are much more spontaneous. Level one students do not need to have any previous experience, though it is not uncommon for people to attend who have a practical background in the arts. Everyone is welcome.
  • Students with previous experience (Level two):
For advanced students, printmaking may be used in a fine art or design context to produce one off art works or to disseminate information through posters or books. It may be used to print designs on fabrics for clothing or upholstery, or even to produce wall paper! Some of this year’s printmakers took part in the International Contemporary Artists' Book Fair 09, prepared work for personal exhibitions, and completed the year by staging an exhibition at Leeds College of Art and producing an edition box set of prints. Level two students need to have first attended Printmaking Level one as although supervised, a much higher level of competence is expected.

Course structure

When starting the course, you will be introduced to each technique over a two week period. You will be given direction by the tutor but are encouraged to bring along source material of you own to work from. After completing the introductory stage, you have the choice of going over the techniques again and in so doing become a much more adept and confident all round printmaker. Alternatively you may wish to investigate one particular process in more depth, and so take the first tentative steps towards specialization. This heavily supervised teaching environment should be enjoyed until both students and staff feel that a good level of competency has been reached.

Advanced students should first have attended Printmaking Level One at Leeds College of Art. This class may well be pushing the boundaries of printmaking practice! Expect prints to be made using a combination of techniques, including Photo-etching and Type Setting, and to work alongside others ready and motivated to direct their own course of investigation. The emphasis is on individual expression and experimentation.

Teaching

The processes are taught by example in small groups and on an individual basis, by an experienced printmaking tutor with support from several expert technicians.

The course is held in the College’s well-equipped, purpose built, non-toxic printroom at the Vernon Street Building, in the city centre.Parking is limited around the site although there is a College car park at the Blenheim Walk Building, costing £1 for the evening.A permit should be bought from the car park attendant and displayed.
