Course content | A foundation course in jewellery giving you a thorough grounding in the many processes used in the production of jewellery and the opportunity to develop personal skills in the use of hand tools. You will develop a growing awareness of what constitutes good design related to quality crafting. Course one: This ten week course for beginners will enable you to learn the basics of jewellery construction and to make simple pieces of jewellery along the way. You will be able to work in base metals before taking the plunge and use silver. This short course will give you the confidence to develop your own ideas and continue to level two. You will be learn how to: · Solder metal together · Decorate metal surfaces with texture & pattern · Make wirework, links & chains · Combine the techniques in a meaningful way to devise your own personal jewellery designs. Having decided what you want to make, draw it well enough to communicate your idea to others and analyse how it might be made, you wil lconfidently use a range of tools and personal skills to bring it to fruition. Courses two and three: If you are a new student, you will receive an induction to the skills and techniques listed above. If a continuing student, you will receive guidance on how to develop you own designs and the making of individual pieces of jewellery.
Teaching | Sessions usually begin with a group meeting for about 15 minutes where students can show their work to the group, share problems and successes and bring to the class anything they wish, for discussion. The remainder of the session is devoted to practical work, split between one-to-one teaching and demonstrations/short information sessions to the group. Please note that some new students will start each term. If you are a continuing student, your tutor may take some time inducting new students at the start of the term, although projects are set up for you to work on with the support of the technician.
