Charlie Frank

Charlie Frank, a 2nd year BA (Hons) Creative Advertising student is collaborating on an exciting nationwide competition brief with a student from New York.

Charlie is specialising as a copywriter, who is responsible for applying creative strategy and producing all the text elements in an advertisement. Typically, in advertising practice a copywriter works closely with an art director, who takes responsibility for the visual elements of the advertisement to create a cohesive, strong message. Prompted by a module on her course that required students to submit work to an advertising competition Charlie decided to look internationally for a student that was skilled in art direction to collaborate with to enter the competition.

Charlie was encouraged by the programme leader to search for institutions that offered creative advertising programmes across America to see if any of their students would like to work with her. Happily, a tutor passed on her details to Liz Sadkowski, a 4th year Advertising Design Student at the Prestigious Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan. Liz responded to Charlie and the two students discussed their skills and aspirations over Skype and decided to work together on a competition brief for the Young Creative Network (YCN).

YCN is a creative agency that organises annual competitions for students wishing to get experience working on live briefs from brands, charities and other organisations. Work that is submitted and is commended is published in a Student Annual, which is distributed across the creative industries. Many of the previous winners have secured high profile placements and employment in the creative industries.

Charlie says

‘I am so pleased that I was encouraged to think internationally about this project, and that I got in touch with Liz and I’m really excited to be sharing my ideas with someone that’s interested in the same things as me. Technology has made things very easy so if I think of a great idea I can share it with Liz instantly, and we can talk through things on Skype.  I’d definitely like to work in New York at some point in my career, so this will be a great project to have on my CV.  I plan to keep in touch with Liz after the competition and continue to work with her on creative briefs.'
