Always providing opportunities to meet new people, and the chance to network with other creative professionals, the Creative Networks Event hosted here at the College presented a unique opportunity for one Leeds College of Art student, Annique Albericci. Studying on the FD/BA Photography course Annique was given the opportunity to meet Kevin Cummins, a photographer who has been a major influence on the Yorkshire based student. Best known for his work at NME for much of the 80’s and 90’s, Kevin became synonymous with the 'Madchester' era before moving on to become the author of the acclaimed book of Joy Division photographs and ‘The Smiths and Beyond’ which captures one of the great British bands of the 80s who brought poetry, miserablism, celibacy chic and gladioli waving to a grey post-punk music scene.
Catching up with Annique we had the opportunity to speak to her about the experience:
How long has Kevin Cummins been an influence on your work?
Ever since I got into music photography around 9 years ago, I was not sure what to do in terms of a career so I spoke to a friend who pointed out that I had an eye for the camera and that I should look at photography. Deciding to give it a go I managed to secure a position as an in-house photographer at the Stone Roses Bar. It was here where I was introduced to the work of Kevin Cummins.
What specific elements of his style do you like?
I particularly like the old black and white photographs, shot on film; it adds gritty realism to his work and the way elements were undertaken behind the scenes gives a documentary feel to his images.
How did you feel when you were asked to cover an event which featured the photographer?
I was massively overwhelmed, originally the offer to shoot the event was given to a friend, however she felt my photographic style and passion for Kevin Cummins made me a more suitable choice. I was absolutely ecstatic when the assignment was passed to me.
What was it like to meet Kevin?
To be honest with you I had no idea what he looked like at first. I mean I have seen the odd photograph of him, when he was younger, he was about my age. But like me he is not too keen on having his picture taken so there are few published photographs of him.
Talking with him I let slip I’m a huge fan, his response was very flattering and he was pleased to meet someone who was so into his work. Meeting him was an unbelievable experience; he’s quite a forthright and intense person but in a positive way and this translates into his work. I think this is why I am such a fan, I can relate to this as I have similar traits.
In what ways has his work influenced yours?
Kevin Cummins has influenced me in many ways, particularly his style and technique which has led me to adopted similar qualities and aesthetics. I love the high contrast live shots he produces, but generally his success has influenced me and made me want to be successful too!
Meeting him in person, was it what you expected or was he completely different to how you envisioned him to be?
Well before the event, I knew more about his work than him as a person but meeting Kevin gave another dimension to his work. I am now more aware of the personality behind the images, he’s passionate, funny, relaxed and down to earth which was nice to discover. Meeting him had a calming effect on me, he’s controlling but in a positive way, like a tutor or mentor would be. For example when I was taking photographs he suggested additional shots to support my own, but in a non invasive way.
Did you manage to ask any burning questions?
I have to admit, I was a little cheeky, I asked for a job at NME, well you have to try don’t you. He laughed before giving me some useful advice, persistence is key. He also provided me with the opportunity to send my work over to him for a bit of a critique which is such an exciting opportunity.
How did you feel when he took your photograph?
Well It all happened really quickly actually, I was moving people into position to take a photograph when he took the camera off me, guided me into position and took a picture. I could not believe it; I just need to meet him again so I can get it signed.
Finally, what did you think of his presentation?
I really enjoyed the seminar; he engaged the audience and covered various topics including ethics which I found really interesting. He had lots of advice to give and I came away feeling like I had learnt a lot.
