Two friends from college ended up as a creative team (copywriter & art director) with a leading Northern advertising agency, and have recently been nominated for Best Junior Creative Team at the Roses Advertising Awards 2008. Click the play button on the video opposite to find out more.
Jules and Vicki
Jules: “Doing the course made us very ambitious. We were very much encouraged to make our book look as good as possible – to actually go out, ring people up, hammer down doors, and get as many live briefs as possible.”
Vicki: “We work for Principles Agency in Leeds – it’s one of a group of marketing companies, and we concentrate solely on advertising: TV, press, outdoor, radio… anything that’s required.”
Vicki: “From a tiny little column in a newspaper to a massive 48-sheet… We’ve just done Russell Hobbs, which is a big TV ad and which is on all the channels. Anything and everything, really; that’s what’s good about our job. One day you’re an expert on trees, and the next you’re an expert on shoes. It’s really varied.”
Jules: “We come up with concepts together, so we’ll work for a couple of days on any brief and then once we’ve got some concepts chosen, I’ll go off and do the words, and Vicki will start thinking about layouts and graphics.”
Vicki: “It does cross over – a good art director can write copy, and a good copywriter can art-direct. Principles is a really large company; it’s got loads of different sections, so although we work in advertising, there are all kinds of ways to get into it, not just the creative route. Production handles all the print, and Media does all the media-buying, all the TV space. There are so many people in it, which is another reason why it’s good to visit places, because you learn about all the different careers.”
