BA (Hons) Printed Textiles & Surface Pattern Design
About the course
Graduates go on to work in fashion and furnishing textile design, card and gift wrap design, wall-covering design, media and publications, fashion marketing, styling, buying, fashion accessories, costume and interior design.
Type of work
Second-year student Tabitha Upstone’s tutors encouraged the class to enter the prestigious French textile design competition Unitex, which attracts more than 900 students from all over Europe. She gained inspiration from Shakespeare cartoon characters combined with colours from Brazilian street graffiti to create the design for her dress. The final five shortlisters worked with people in industry to produce their designs for a fashion show and the final judging. The panel of judges included last year’s winner, Nicola Strathearn (another student from the College) and professionals from the fashion and textiles industry.
Award
Tabitha’s design won first place and she received a cheque for €3,000. Her dress was exhibited alongside other finalists’ at the Printemps store in Lyon, and she takes her place on the competition’s judging panel the following year. She hopes to pursue a career designing textiles for fashion.
