Live projects in Second Life

Chris Meredith, a second-year student on the Foundation/BA (Hons) Design for Digital Media course, was involved in a Second Life project during 2007 – and picked up another lucrative job as a result.

Second Life can be called an online virtual world, an online multi-user experience (MUSE) or a simulated world. Many people make the mistake of calling it a video game, but it’s actually 3D web.

Because of the nature of the Design for Digital Media course, some of our tutors have developed close links with Second Life. Tutor Annabeth Robinson was commissioned by Penguin Books to design a giveaway for a prestigious book launch for William Gibson in Second Life, for example.

William Gibson originally coined the term ‘cyberspace’ in his novel Neuromancer. So it was fitting that his latest book, Spook Country, was promoted in Second Life. And it’s particularly interesting that Penguin, a traditional book publisher, is choosing a more contemporary route to bring awareness to younger markets.

Since Chris designed his blue ant for Gibson’s book launch, he has been approached by a company in the music industry to help with another Second Life project. He’s being paid well for this project—but has been sworn to secrecy until his creation is launched!
