This course will introduce you to the skills you need to develop jewellery pieces from home. The first course will concentrate on practical metalwork skills and work through basic techniques and methods, such as: rolling, texturing, forming and soldering.

Teaching methods
You will be supported with demonstrations and explanations of each technique and how to use specific equipment and be shown best working practice to get the most from tools and materials. Each week you will work individually on your own and experiment with new techniques before putting them into practice with a finished piece/ object towards the end of the course, where you will also show your work in the end of year exhibition at Leeds College of Art.
The course is aimed at
People aged 19+ living in the Leeds metropolitan district, out of work, on benefits, people who are in need of the opportunity to try something new, change direction and gain knowledge and skills to progress further.
What to expect
Week 1 - As an introduction do a simple ring project, so initially do some piercing practice in copper, then pierce a strip of copper which would be used to make a ring with demonstration on filling, forming the ring and finishing.
Week 2 - Using wire and rod, demo concentrating on twisting wire to different effects to add to the ring.
Week 3 - Texturing, rolling and hammering
Week 4 - Disc cutting/doming
Week 5 - Press forming
Weeks 6 - Jump rings
Weeks 7 to 10 - Personal project work and any other skills in particular you would like to be shown.
Level of learning

Fees:
Each ten week course costs £57.50 full fee and £15 for people of a pensionable age. The course is for people out of work, and free for those on Job Seekers Allowance. Other benefits do qualify for a fee waiver; please see the section on fee waivers below for more information.
