Community Progression for beginners

The Artstart courses are designed to give you preparation for progressing into further creative education giving students a broad introduction to a range of disciplines, including 3D, drawing, painting, textiles, printing and mixed media. Courses are for complete beginners and improvers. Courses will involve both traditional  and contemporary ideas and techniques and you will need to be willing to try new things.

What to expect
To experiment and open your mind to new ideas and ways of looking and expressing your own ideas and thoughts, you will explore a vibrant range of methods and techniques and learn the necessary skills needed to make a variety of finished art works. There will be some written work and you have to keep an individual learning plan to track your progress on the course. We always ask for your feedback at the end of every term which helps us to make sure you are enjoying the course. You will also learn how to keep a sketchbook which you will use to experiment in; it will also help support you’re learning on the course. There will also be some group discussion about work and ideas.

Teaching methods
At the start of a project, you will get support with demonstrations and clear explanations of what the project involves. You will also be shown how to use specific equipment and best working practice to get the most from materials. Each week you will work individually on your own pieces and you will be asked to talk about your thoughts and reflect on your work/ learning throughout the course. Your tutor will support you throughout the course and he/she will help you to develop a creative understanding of your environment and ways of seeing and thinking which will support your practical development.

The course is aimed at
People who are aged 19+ and living in the Leeds metropolitan district. People out of work and may be on benefits. People experiencing health problems and mental health difficulties, or who have a disability. People who are in need of the opportunity to try something new, change direction and gain knowledge and skills to progress onto higher level courses.

Artstart courses – courses for beginners
Takes place in various Community venues across Leeds. Classes are for beginners and are a gentle introduction to the ideas, methods and materials used in contemporary art and design. They are designed to help students gain the confidence they need to return to learn, the direct progression route being stage two Artstart or the Access course depending on experience and ability level.

Level of learning
This course is for complete beginners. You do not need any experience to join. If you are unsure whether the course is suitable, you can contact us using the details at the bottom of this page.

Artstart at the Feel Good Factor in Chapeltown

Day & Time

Course description
This is a beginners course based in a very friendly centre that promotes healthy living and supports local people to improve their lifestyle. The course is based around giving learners an open introduction to many of the methods and ideas of contemporary and traditional art and crafts. You will be given support to think differently about your work and develop your own ideas into real Art work inspired by exhibitions displaying artists work from around the world.

Term one – Printed pattern: Using the fabrics as a source for inspiration. You will design and print your own patterns on paper and fabric. There will be a trip to the Art College towards the end of the term for a taster day in the printed textiles workshop.

Term two – Project inspired by current local exhibition. The project will be confirmed closer to the time.

Term three – Contemporary portraits. You will use a variety of techniques based on the styles of other artist to paint your own portrait on canvas. You will learn about proportion, drawing for painting preparation techniques as well as colour mixing and paint application.

Artstart – City of Leeds School

Course description
The course is based at a central location close to main bus routes. It is an introduction to a variety of craft and art disciplines, the course has been structured as follows:

Term one- Textiles: Exploring fabric painting, disperse dyes, batik and applique. You will explore a range of decorative techniques and learn how to design and decorate fabric pieces.

Term Two-  3D: This term will explore the qualities of working with sculptural pieces, working mainly with clay and modelling wire to build three dimensional objects based on a given theme.

Leeds Art Gallery Artstart

Produce your own works of Art inspired by the gallery’s collection....

This course will revolve around the collection at the City Art Gallery and use both traditional and contemporary works of art as a source for learning about ideas, techniques and how to produce something different.

Each course/ term costs £57.50 full fee and £15 for retired people. Fee waivers do apply for this course, the course is free if you are currently in receipt of the following benefits. You will need to provide up-to-date proof with your enrolment form.

 

Evening Artstart
at Leeds College of Art

Create 3D sculptural works of art in a specialised studio (January start) or experiment with a variety of textile printing and decorative methods in our textile print room (April start).

Course two – Science and art: you will explore observational drawing techniques and learn to see differently to improve methods. Working from botanical objects for inspiration, you will develop drawing skills and sculptural skills later in the term with a plaster carving and casting project.

Course three – Imaginative textiles: you will incorporate poetry and text with colour and design to print onto paper and fabric. You will explore a range of decorative techniques including printing, batik and dying.
