Art at the Museum

This course is specifically for people experiencing mental health issues or have lack of confidence and need to learn at their own pace. With more gentle but challenging projects you will learn essential skills. Courses work towards the end of year exhibition at Leeds College of Art where you will have the opportunity to show your work and celebrate achievements. 

Suitable for beginners and improvers. Learners can enrol in January or April. You can do a ten week course or stay for the full 20 weeks.

At the start of each project, you will get support with demonstrations and explanations of what the project involves and how to use specific equipment and be shown best working practice to get the most from tools and materials. Each week you will work individually on your own and experiment with new techniques before putting them into practice.  

The course is aimed at
People aged 19+ living in the Leeds metropolitan district, out of work, on benefits, people who are in need of the opportunity to try something new and learn in a supported environment.

Art at the Museum – Course Information

A new course based at the Discovery Centre which is the City Museums’ stores with access to over one million objects for inspiration. This course will introduce you to a range of drawing techniques. You will learn to see things differently using the ‘Using the right side of the Brain’ method which has been very successful with helping students to draw from observation in the past. You will learn about line, shape, form, tone and shade and how to put this onto paper using a variety of techniques and materials. Using your drawings, you will develop ideas further with other materials.

The course will be structured by the following themes:

Term 1
Theme home and Garden: Using the theme of dwelling places and memory, using vintage toys, collection of preserved plants, gardening and household items from the archive.

Term 2
Theme: Science and Art. Colourful observational drawings and paintings. Drawing from the natural history collection. Moths, butterflies, shells, bones and rocks.

Term 3
Theme: Imagination and Word. Looking at old books, fabrics, vintage clothes. Combining an object with poetry, and short creative writing using the object as inspiration to create illustration, silk painting, and lettering.
