Links with industry

Each year we collaborate with Tigerprint and Pattern Fashion Fabric Studio, as well as other manufacturers and design studios whenever appropriate opportunities arise. In the final year we encourage you to work with companies, and this has led to exciting successes for our students in Europe and the USA.

Work placements

This is a key aspect of the course from the second year onwards, and you will be encouraged to do periods of work placement to suit your individual requirements. Students have recently been as far afield as Calcutta, the USA, Amsterdam, Barcelona and Milan, although the majority go to London or other UK locations. In 2011, our students worked in the design studios of Liberty, Alexander McQueen, Topshop, Miss Selfridge, River Island, Duchamp, Amanda Wakeley, Rob Ryan, Paul Smith, Alison Willoughby, Karen Nicol, Habitat, Oasis, Timorous Beasties, DKNY, Diane von Furstenberg and numerous others.

Study visits

Every year, first-year students have a week-long study trip to Amsterdam while second-year students have a choice of two visits to Paris. A further visit to New York is scheduled every three years, open to students across all of the years.

Exhibition opportunities

In February and September each year, the course shows and sells student designs at Indigo fashion fabric trade fair in Paris. Those students specialising in interiors may show their work on our stand at MoODtrade fair in Brussels. We also show student work at the Leeds International Book Fair and the Glasgow International Artists’ Book Fair. The New Designers Exhibition in London is an opportunity for our graduating students to present themselves and their work to a professional audience and to meet potential employers.

Resources

We have professionally equipped textile-print workshops staffed by specialist technicians. These workshops offer equipment for dyeing, screen-printing, heat-transfer printing, digital printing and laser-cutting. The well-equipped CAD suites have both PCs and Macs. All students have access to the internet and use software such as Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign (no prior knowledge of these is necessary).

European links

As well as visiting and exhibiting at major European trade fairs and placing our students in design studios in European cities, the course participates in the College’s Erasmus student exchange scheme (see page 75 for more information).

Progression & career opportunities

We design for a global industry and our graduates are employed in design studios throughout the world in fashion and Interior textiles; card and gift wrap; wall coverings; media and publications; fashion marketing; styling; buying; fashion accessories; costume design; and interior design. Each year, several students continue their studies at master’s or PGCE level.
