About
The major challenge facing interior designers today is to ensure that
the design and construction of their concepts are sustainable - and this will only intensify in the future.
Study interior design with us and you won’t be disappointed. You’ll be exposed to the design and production of sustainable, functional and aesthetically pleasing environments. You will be taught by a team of practising interior designers and CAD experts, supported by visiting artists, architects and engineers. So if you’re interested in making a difference to the future by designing sustainable interiors and environments, then this course is definitely for you.
First year
We begin by examining the design process and by developing your basic knowledge and skills of 3D design through design projects, workshops and related study programmes.
Modules include:
• Context of Practice 1
• Personal & Professional Practice 1
• Visual Studies & Communication
• Design Innovations
• Team Project
• 2D & 3D AutoCAD.
Second year
This year uses live projects to test all the skills and knowledge learnt at the previous level, involving teamwork and reflecting on professional practice where possible. You’ll take part in an international module involving partner colleges in Europe, and will carry out research and development for your dissertation and a major project of your personal choice.
Modules include:
• Context of Practice 2
• Personal & Professional Practice 2
• Responsive
• Design Strategies
• Professional Design Practice.
Third year
At this level, students mainly negotiate a programme of self-directed study; this is done with a high level of autonomy, which will eventually sustain you in practice after graduation. It builds on the core skills developed in previous years, and evolves through the application and further development of a personal design language. The resulting portfolio of work and written documents will allow you to showcase all of the key skills you need to be accepted onto a master’s course or to work as a designer within interior and architectural-related design practices.
Modules include:
• Context of Practice 3
• Personal & Professional Practice 3
• Extended Practice.
Working with industry
Site visits and competitions are integrated into levels into the second and third years, depending on availability and relevance.
Work placements
There is the opportunity for a one-month work placement at the end of your second year, for which the Personal and Professional Practice module prepares you.
Sustainability
Leeds College of Art is committed to helping you create design concepts which are not only environmentally sustainable but also cleaner, healthier and safer for occupants. Designers will always need materials, so from the early stages of your studies through to your final project, you’ll be encouraged to be mindful of the finite resources and environmental impact of the materials you select, and to consider a holistic approach to interior design.
Study visits
We offer a residential visit to a major city (usually London) in your first year, and an overseas trip during your second year. Previous destinations have included Milan, Paris, Barcelona, Prague, Berlin and New York.
Resources
Our dedicated design studios are well- equipped with networked computers and individual workstations running the latest versions of industry-standard software. Colour scanning, plotting and printing facilities are available, together with a CNC laser-cutter for model-making.
European links
The course has strong links with partner colleges in the EU. You’ll have the opportunity to participate in the College’s Group for International Design Education (GIDE) project, and to take part in the Erasmus student exchange.
Progression & career opportunities
Recent graduates have gone into a variety of careers in retailing, entertainment & leisure and corporate offices. They have become CAD visualisers or work in film and TV, exhibitions, museums and art installations. Others have gone on to work in design consultancies and architectural practices in the UK and overseas, including Beijing, Dubai and Singapore; some have set up their own design businesses; and some work freelance. A number of students go on to postgraduate study.
Mature students (21+)
We welcome applications from students who are returning to education. We offer many opportunities for adults even if you don’t have conventional entry qualifications. We’re interested in your motivation, your potential, and your ability to follow the course successfully.
