About

This one-year course is ideal for students who don’t have a great deal of art and design experience but want to develop their practical skills and knowledge, or who need to build a portfolio of work in order to progress to our Extended Diploma in Art & Design course.

This course will enable you to develop your drawing, painting and making skills through a series of art and design activities, and you will be introduced to a range of specialist areas such as photography, graphic design, textiles, print-making and 3D work using wood, metal and glass. This will allow you to build a portfolio of work and gain the qualifications needed to progress to a higher-level course or employment.

Course content

The course is made up of compulsory and optional units taught through a series of practical projects assessed throughout the year. The 3D project work will also lead to an additional BTEC Award in 3D Design at Level Two.

Study visits

Visits usually include exhibitions, museums and galleries.

Resources

The course is mainly studio-based, but you will also work in specialist workshops for glass, metal, wood, computers and photography.

Extra support

As part of the programme, you will be encouraged to develop your personal and thinking skills, and to participate in a range of other enrichment activities including visits, exhibitions and an additional qualification in crafts.

Progression & career opportunities

Students who successfully achieve the minimum of a merit grade at Level Two Diploma in Art & Design may progress to the Extended Diplomas in Art & Design.

Course fees & costs

See course fees page and find out if you qualify for any support. Additionally, you will need to spend approximately £50 for materials over the course of the year.
