The Extended Diploma in Art & Design course caters for students who wish to progress to a career in art and design. Some applicants may have clear ideas about their chosen career, whilst others have yet to decide but know they want to work within some area of the creative industries. Typical careers leading from this course include; Fine Art, 3D Design, Fashion, Textiles/Surface Pattern, Graphic Design, Advertising, Film, Photography, Animation and Illustration. The course is designed to equip all students with the necessary experience and skills to successfully progress to Higher Education courses. In some cases a direct route into employment is possible.

Over the two years, you will develop a wide range of skills and gain a deeper understanding of the art and design sector. You will build up a portfolio of work enabling you to apply to higher education courses in your chosen specialist area.

First year

The first year is split into 2 distinct stages;

Stage 1 – General art and design skill development.

This is an introduction to the many aspects of art and design. You will develop your general art and design skills by working through a range of assignments, including photography, 3D, drawing and painting, CAD, fashion, textiles and graphic design.

This period of diagnostic study will provide you with the grounding you need for all Art and Design practice.

Stage 2 – Specialist area

You will begin working in your chosen specialist area for the remainder of the year according to grouped clusters (fashion, graphic design, textiles/surface pattern design, 3D design, or fine art).

Throughout the course you will study the work of other artists, designers and craftspeople, developing an understanding of the historical and cultural context of art and design.

Second year

During this year you will deepen your skill and understanding within your selected specialist area and build up an individual portfolio of work.

Fashion

You will extend your knowledge of materials and processes and gain a greater insight into the many roles within the fashion industry. You will use a range of pattern cutting and making techniques alongside 2D visualising techniques using a variety of media including CAD, photography and traditional media. Potential careers include fashion designer, designer maker, fashion stylist, fashion illustrator, fashion retail and management.

Fine Art Area

Developing your own practice as a fine artist, you will be encouraged to take an exploratory and open-minded approach to ideas and processes. You will explore a wide range of media and techniques including print-making, photography, drawing, painting, mixed media and 3D. You will also study the concepts underlying contemporary and past artists’ work. Potential careers include illustrator, painter, sculptor, photographer, print-maker, teacher or lecturer.

Textiles/Surface Pattern Area

You will extend your knowledge of materials, techniques and processes across a wide range of textile/surface pattern contexts. You will develop your design ideas through extensive visual research, using drawing, painting, colour and mixed media. Potential careers include textile/surface pattern designer for fashion and furnishing fabrics, independent designer maker, fashion illustrator, colourist, or stylist.

3D Design Area

You will develop your knowledge of 3D materials and processes through projects which include product and interior design. These incorporate a range of materials including wood, plaster, metal and plastics. You will also use drawing and model-making to develop your ideas. Potential careers include product designer, interior designer, set designer, model-maker, furniture designer or architect.

Graphic Design Area

You will extend your knowledge of materials and processes and gain a greater insight into the role of graphic design and graphic imagery in our society. You will use a range of techniques including Apple mac and state-of-the-art software, photography/ moving image and traditional media. Potential careers include graphic designer, illustrator, photographer, creative director, advertising, typographer. As well as these specialisms progression opportunities also include digital film, animation and games design.

Working with industry

Live briefs will take place during your second year, giving you the opportunity to understand the working practices of a variety of art and design roles.

Study visits

Day-study visits take place in both years of the course to a variety of national art galleries and exhibitions.

Resources

You can make full use of the College’s resources, including art and design studios and well-equipped workshops in print-making, textile print, photography, 3D and computers.

Progression & career opportunities

Most students progress to BA (Hons) degree or foundation degree courses in their chosen specialist area of art or design. Full guidance is given throughout the course to help you make appropriate choices. You will also study complementary qualifications in both the first and second year of the course to enhance your educational profile.

Entry Requirements

You should be at least 16 years old, have four GCSE passes at grade C or above, or an Intermediate GNVQ or a Level Two Diploma in Art & Design at a merit or above, and be able to present a portfolio of work which shows your interest and ability in art, design and/or technology.
