A Sense of Place

Brighouse student Maggie Macaulay captured on camera her love for Brighouse Market. Her work is being exhibited in a photography exhibition called ‘A Sense of Place’, alongside 100 other students from the National Diploma Art & Design course, at Leeds College of Art.

The exhibition reveals everyday objects and places in an unusual and creative way, it will be on display at Armley Mills Industrial Museum, May 8 – May 29.

Course tutor, Phil Smith took Maggie and her classmates to Armley Mills to study photography techniques. Phil explains ‘The project brief was to capture familiar objects from an unfamiliar perspective. The students were taught to consider the composition of their shot and to think about how to represent an object from an abstract angle’.

Maggie said, ‘Everybody enjoyed this project. For most of us it was the first time we’d used a traditional camera and developed photos in a dark room’.

After her visit to Armley Mills, Maggie was asked to capture a personal sense of place she finds in her own community. Maggie chose Brighouse Market for her inspiration, ‘The market is a special place for me, I feel like I’ve grown up with the stall holders and the community who shop there. I even work part-time on one of the fruit and veg stalls.’ Her piece is titled Lady of the Market.

The work in the exhibition is very diverse and shows what’s close to the heart of each student. It depicts anything from family, possessions, neighbourhoods and part-time jobs.
