It is difficult to estimate an individual's cost of living, as we all have different spending expectations. However, our students have told us what they find to be the average costs of living expenses for a student in Leeds, and we hope these figures will be helpful. These figures represent a reasonable estimate for the academic year 2011/12. To allow for inflation, you should expect an annual increase of up to 5%.
We have produced these guidelines in good faith, but can take no responsibility for a student's chosen lifestyle or unforeseen increases in the cost of living. When you enter the UK you will have to show the immigration officer that you are able to cover the cost of living expenses as well as any tuition fees you may have to pay. If you have dependents who will be living with you, you must be able to demonstrate that you can also cover their living costs.
You should budget for at least £600 per month. Costs may be higher than this figure. Costs are based on 52 weeks, if you plan to travel home in the holiday periods your costs may be less.

Council Tax
This is a local tax, payable by householders or tenants. International students living in a hall of residence or a student-only private household will not have to pay any Council Tax. Please note that if you are a joint tenant sharing a house with non-students, all tenants will have to share payment of the Council Tax bill, including you.
