BA (Hons) Photography - Senior Lecturer

Ross has been involved in photography and education for over 30 years, he is a practicing photographer with an MA in documentary practice and theory from the University of Derby. Formerly Programme Leader for BA (Hons) Photography Ross is now a Senior Lecturer and has been involved in external examining and mentoring across a range of lens based media courses in England.

After leaving university where he was taught by Daniel Meadows on the BA Photography Course in Hull and prior to becoming ‘almost’ a full time lecturer, Ross was a documentary photographer. He has worked on many commissions and residencies from the ‘coal industry’ to ‘sheep farming’, ‘Faith’ within Britain and ‘Homelessness and alternative housing’ from which he has exhibited widely.

Ross is Year tutor for Level 5 students on the BA Photography Course and also supports Erasmus students during this year, both students from Leeds traveling and studying abroad as well as international students who study on the BA Photography Course.

This year Ross has secured external activities collaborating with local galleries/agencies and practitioners as well as internationally, with the University of New Mexico, producing a joint publication with students at Level 5.

Ross is also sustainability representative within Photography, promoting and reporting students work, where it explores issues of sustainability across a wide range of potentials.

Although lens based practice is his main focus Ross is actively involved within the arts scene in general and is an official volunteer at Leeds Museums and Galleries, he regularly attends meetings, openings and debates delivered by the Henry Moore Institute and Leeds City Art Gallery amongst others.

Ross’ research area explores ‘photography as evidence’, this has recently required him to visit locations where lens based media is used in order to evidence an event or action, including Wetherby Race Course, Manchester Velodrome as well as archives associated with ‘Photo Finish’.

As a lover of the outdoors Ross has recently had work published in ‘Wild Guide Lake District and Yorkshire Dales: Hidden Places and Great Adventures - Including Bowland and South Pennines’ Published 1 Jun 2016by Daniel Starr (Author) ISBN: 9781910636091

As well as recently being a selector for Open Photographic Exhibition: ‘Space and Place’, and ’Abandoned Yorkshire' Photography Exhibition at Left Bank Leeds, a multidisciplinary arts venue.
